HOW CFS IS EMPOWERING ONE NON-PROFIT'S JOURNEY INTO LEGACY GIVING
Each September 13th, CFS joins organisations around the world to celebrate International Legacy Giving Day. A legacy gift, also known as a planned gift or deferred gift, is a donation to a non-profit or charity that is arranged while the donor is alive, but takes effect after their death.
Leaving a legacy gift is a powerful way to make a lasting impact on the causes close to our hearts. Since 2020, CFS has been championing this way of giving – and we're witnessing a growing interest in legacy giving among donors who want their philanthropy to extend beyond their lifetime. This shift is not only transforming how individuals approach charitable giving, but also how non-profit organisations plan for long-term sustainability.
CAREGIVERS ALLIANCE LIMITED: CARING FOR THE CAREGIVERS
Caregivers Alliance Limited (CAL), a non-profit that trains and supports caregivers of individuals with mental health conditions, is one such organisation embracing this change.
You might not realise it, but caregivers of individuals with mental health conditions require support too. Their challenging role can adversely affect their mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Many struggle to cope and experience burnout from the strain. CAL offers essential training and support, encouraging self-care and aiding these unsung heroes in navigating the complexities of mental health caregiving.
In collaboration with CFS, CAL is currently exploring methods to encourage their beneficiaries to consider legacy donations. This not only secures future funding but also strengthens the relationship between the organisation and its community.
“Many caregivers have shared the immense value of CAL’s training programmes and how their lives have improved through the support provided by our staff and peers facing similar challenges,“ said Tim Lee, CEO of CAL. “One caregiver, without heirs to inherit her property, expressed a desire to leave it to us. We are partnering with CFS to learn how to implement legacy giving processes to honour such requests.”
A legacy gift to CAL does more than support the organisation; it invests in the mental health of entire families. Donations fund vital programmes, expand their reach, and equip caregivers with necessary tools to thrive.
THE POWER OF LEGACY GIVING IN SUPPORTING CAREGIVERS
By including a charity like CAL in their will, donors ensure continuous support for those dedicated to caring for others. It's a powerful method to create an enduring impact even after one's passing.
Legacy gifts offer a stable funding source, enabling non-profits to plan long-term and develop sustainable programs. A gift could take the form of cash, insurance, CPF monies, property or marketable securities.
For caregivers, this translates to the next generation of caregivers having essential support to keep them going, and never having to feel like they are on the journey alone.
Through CFS's partnership with Caregivers Alliance, more caregivers will have the chance to leave meaningful bequests that will support future generations. This innovative philanthropic approach allows donors to extend their generosity and values beyond their lifetimes, and far into the future.
